Introduction to Sashiko - A Stitching Practice

This introductory class provides an overview of Sashiko, the Japanese stitching and mending practice. The Instructor guides beginners in gaining basic skills and knowledge to apply this practice to both decorative and functional goods.Participants will practice the unshin method of stitching with palm thimble to complete a small sampler and coaster based on the Hitomezashi (grid based) Sashiko style.

Prerequisite skills:  Thread a hand sewing needle, Make a running stitch

Pre-class homework:  Watch 10 minute video on unshin style of Sashiko stitching. Link provided upon enrollment

Students bring: Embroidery scissors, straight pins, ruler

Class duration:  3.5 hours

Materials fee:  $45.00 for 1 Adjustable palm thimble, 2 Sashiko needles, 2 Finger cots, Japanese Sashiko threads in 3 weights (about 100 m total), 3 Fabric samples, 2 Preprinted soluble adhesive designs,1 Preprinted coaster kit with 4 beginner designs, 1 Sashiko-stitchable drawstring storage bag
