Untangling Cables

Have you ever wanted to knit a beautiful piece with cables, crossed, or traveling stitches? Here’s your class. In Untangling Cables, we will begin a washcloth with 3 different cables to give you a great start to creating cables in you knitting. Students will be instructed on using a cable needle, holding stitches to front and back, and cabling without a needle. Pieces will be shown that share traveling stitches, simple crosses in different pieces (scarves, hats, sweaters).

Participants will receive pattern with chart and written instructions and important notes with helpful suggestions.

Required skills: Knit and purl stitch, slipping stitches

Students bring: Worsted weight cotton yarn solid color, preferably light color. US 7

needles, cable needle. Scissors, tapestry needle, other notions.

Homework: None

Card Weaving

Card Weaving

Learn to weave a warp-faced band using a pack of four hole cards. These cards allow the weaver to manipulate individual warp threads and open up a whole new world of design. Card weaving is a great way to make decorative straps and edgings for woven, knitted and felted items.

 Students will learn to warp the loom and manipulate the cards to create different patterns, along with making the shed to pass the shuttle through, how to keep edges tidy and maintain tension. Previous weaving experience is not required, but if you have dabbled in this craft and want to improve your skills, this is a class for you.

Prerequisite skills: None

Pre-class homework: None

Students bring: 12-24 cards (inexpensive on Amazon), Pen, Scissors, Peaches & cream cotton yarn in several colors (contact Odette at odette@skybest.com for questions on thread) Permanent marker Large yarn stitch holder (needs to hold 12 cards with thread in them), large clip—anything to hold or clamp your cards to keep them from slipping Small stick shuttle Backstrap or inkle loom (the Fiber fest has looms available for use and purchase if you decide to continue weaving)

Tunisian Crochet - Level 1

Discover why Tunisian Crochet is both fun and addictive. In this beginner-friendly class you'll learn the essential stitches and techniques—including how to work in the round. Once thought only suitable for blankets and throws, we now use this technique for just about anything— including crocheted lace. It is a fast way of working since unlike knitting and ordinary crochet, you do not turn your work. With just these basics, you'll be surprised at how quickly you can start creating your own unique stitch patterns.

Participants receive a $25 discount when signing up for Level 1 and Level 2

Decorating Wool Slippers

There is nothing like a cozy pair of wool slippers on a chilly morning. In this class you will make your own unique pair of slippers by needle felting a colorful wool design on commercially made wool slippers. You will have a chance to enhance your needle felting skills—plus take home something special.

Prerequisite skills: Some prior needle felting experience (know the basics)

Pre-class homework: Respond with Slipper size at least 30 days before the class start date (unless you’re bringing your own)

Students bring: Bring your favorite needle felting tools/holders, only needles will be provided. Students can bring their own wool slippers to decorate - Wool Slipper material fee will be subtracted ($65) from price

Introduction to Sashiko - A Stitching Practice

This introductory class provides an overview of Sashiko, the Japanese stitching and mending practice. The Instructor guides beginners in gaining basic skills and knowledge to apply this practice to both decorative and functional goods.Participants will practice the unshin method of stitching with palm thimble to complete a small sampler and coaster based on the Hitomezashi (grid based) Sashiko style.

Prerequisite skills:  Thread a hand sewing needle, Make a running stitch

Pre-class homework:  Watch 10 minute video on unshin style of Sashiko stitching. Link provided upon enrollment

Students bring: Embroidery scissors, straight pins, ruler

You have seen the beautiful crochet work done by your mothers, aunts, and grandmothers, but in our modern world have never had the opportunity to learn this craft.  In this class we will start at the very beginning by learning a set of basic stitches.  By combining these stitches you can create an infinite variety of items—garments, accessories, home decor, and more.  Crochet is both an art and a craft.  Begin your journey into the possibilities of crochet.
